Fibre or 5G home WiFi: which is better?

5G home WiFi or fibre? A clear comparison of speed, stability, installation and price in Malaysia, when each one makes sense, and how to check the 5G signal at home.

Updated 24 Oct 2026. Facts checked against each provider's official website.

Quick answer

Choose fibre if it reaches your home: it is faster, steadier and unlimited. Choose 5G home WiFi if fibre is not available, you rent or move often, or you want no installation. Fibre starts from RM89 a month and 5G home WiFi from RM69, before SST.

Fibre vs 5G home WiFi side by side

Fibre is the better choice for most homes it reaches: faster, steadier and unlimited. 5G home WiFi is the better choice when fibre does not reach you, when you rent or move often, or when you want to avoid an installation visit.

Home fibre 5G home WiFi
How it connects A fibre cable into your home A router with a SIM, on the mobile network
Speed Fixed plan speeds up to 2 Gbps Depends on the 5G signal indoors
Stability Very stable Varies with signal, weather and network load
Installation An installer visit and cabling None: plug in and go
Moving house Needs coverage and a relocation at the new address Take the router with you, if 5G reaches the new place
Starts from RM89 a month RM69 a month

CelcomDigi, which sells both, describes it the same way: fibre for heavy users, 4K streaming, gaming and large households; 5G home WiFi for light to moderate users, small homes, renters and temporary setups.

When fibre is the better choice

  • Several people stream, game or work from home at the same time.
  • You need steady video calls and upload speed.
  • You are staying put for the length of a 24-month contract.
  • Your street or building already has fibre from at least one provider.

When 5G home WiFi makes more sense

  • No fibre reaches your address yet.
  • You rent, or expect to move within a year or two.
  • You live alone or as a couple and mostly browse and stream.
  • Your landlord or building management does not allow drilling or cabling.

Check the 5G signal before you commit

5G maps from the providers show outdoor coverage. Indoors, thick walls, tinted glass and higher floors can weaken the signal. Placing the router near a window usually helps. CelcomDigi notes its router switches to 4G automatically if 5G drops, at lower speeds. If you are unsure, ask us to check your address for both fibre and 5G.

5G home WiFi plans compared

  • Unifi Air: from RM69, with a free 5G router or Mi-Fi, and a SIM-only plan with no contract.
  • Maxis 5G Home WiFi: from RM69; the router plans need a 12 or 24-month contract.

Questions

Is 5G home WiFi unlimited?

Most plans are, subject to each provider’s fair usage policy. Some entry plans have a monthly quota instead, such as Unifi Air 120GB and Maxis 5G Home WiFi 69 with 150GB.

Can I switch from 5G to fibre later?

Yes, once fibre reaches your address. If your 5G plan has a contract, check the early termination terms first, or wait until the contract ends.

Do I need a landline for fibre?

No. Fibre broadband works without a landline. Voice calls are usually an optional add-on.
