Guide
How much internet speed do you need?
Is 100Mbps enough, or do you need 300Mbps, 500Mbps or 1Gbps? Choose your home broadband speed by counting devices online at once, with upload tips and today's cheapest plan at each speed.
Quick answer
Count the devices online at the same time on a busy evening. 100 Mbps suits 2 to 4 devices, 300 Mbps suits 4 to 6, 500 to 600 Mbps suits 6 to 8, and 1 Gbps suits 8 to 10. For most families, 300 Mbps is the best balance of price and speed.
Speed by number of devices
Count the devices that are online at the same time on a busy evening, not every gadget in the house. Then use this rule of thumb, based on the guides Unifi and Maxis publish for their own plans:
| Speed | Devices online at once | Typical household |
|---|---|---|
| 100 Mbps | 2 to 4 | One or two people browsing, streaming on one screen, video calls |
| 300 Mbps | 4 to 6 | A small family streaming on the TV while others use phones |
| 500 to 600 Mbps | 6 to 8 | Gaming, working or studying from home, several screens at once |
| 1 Gbps | 8 to 10 | Busy households, big downloads, content creators |
| 2 Gbps | 10 or more | Large homes, serious gamers, lots of smart-home devices |
Unifi suggests 100 Mbps for 2 to 4 users or devices and 300 Mbps for 4 to 6. Maxis suggests 2 to 3 devices for 100 Mbps and 4 to 5 for 300 Mbps. They agree closely, which is why the table above uses ranges.
What actually uses your speed
- Streaming is the biggest everyday user. Several people streaming in high definition at once is what pushes a household from 100 Mbps to 300 Mbps or more.
- Video calls need steady upload as well as download. If someone works from home, look at the upload speed too.
- Gaming needs a stable, low-latency connection more than raw speed, but game downloads and updates are large and finish much faster on 500 Mbps and up.
- Smart-home devices such as cameras and speakers use little each, but they add to the device count.
Don’t forget upload speed
Upload matters for video calls, sending large files, cloud backups and live streaming. Upload speeds differ between plans: Unifi 100 and 300 Mbps both upload at 50 Mbps, while TIME’s 200 Mbps plan uploads at the full 200 Mbps. If you work from home, compare the upload figure in each plan, which we show on every provider page.
Your WiFi can be the real bottleneck
A fast plan only helps if the WiFi reaches every room. Thick walls, a double-storey house or a router tucked in a corner can make a 500 Mbps plan feel slow upstairs. Three fixes:
- Put the router in a central, open spot, not inside a cabinet.
- Choose a plan with a newer router. WiFi 6 and WiFi 7 routers handle more devices at once.
- Add mesh WiFi. Several plans include a mesh node, and the providers sell extra nodes from about RM15 a month.
Which speed is the best value?
Right now, home fibre on a 24-month contract starts from RM89 for 100 Mbps with Unifi and RM89 with Maxis. Here is the cheapest plan at each speed today:
| Speed | Cheapest | Provider | Other providers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 to 200 Mbps | RM89 | Unifi, Maxis | TIME RM99, CelcomDigi RM99 |
| 300 Mbps | RM129 | Unifi, Maxis | CelcomDigi RM139 |
| 500 to 600 Mbps | RM139 | TIME | Unifi RM149, Maxis RM149, CelcomDigi RM159 |
| 1 Gbps | RM199 | TIME | Unifi RM249, Maxis RM249, CelcomDigi RM249 |
| 2 Gbps | RM319 | Unifi, Maxis, CelcomDigi | TIME RM379 |

For most families, 300 Mbps is the sweet spot between price and headroom. If you are unsure, start there: most providers let you upgrade during the contract, while downgrading can cost you a discount or restart the contract.
Questions
Is 100 Mbps enough for a family?
For a couple or a small family who mostly browse and stream on one screen, yes. Once two or three people stream or join video calls at the same time, 300 Mbps gives more breathing room.
Will a faster plan fix slow WiFi?
Not always. If the slowness is far from the router, the WiFi signal is the problem. Better router placement or mesh WiFi usually helps more than a faster plan.
Can I upgrade later?
Usually yes. Providers generally allow upgrades during the contract. Downgrading can cancel a discount or start a new contract, so check the terms first. We can confirm this for you.
